
Wyoming Scores Three to Upend Drake, 3-1; Cowgirls remain unbeaten
Laramie – The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team won its second home game of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. UW came away with a victory over the Drake Bulldogs by a final score of 3-1. Sophomore forward Shaina Ashouri scored two goals in the match to help give the Cowgirls their second straight victory. Freshman defender Alyssa Murray scored a header off a rebound from a corner kick in the 84th minute to score the third and final goal for the Cowgirls and helped move UW’s record to 2-0-3 on the season.
“To put three up on the board does a lot for our confidence,” Wyoming Cowgirl head soccer coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We’ve been creating those opportunities all season and to finally have them fall into the back of the net is a good thing.”
UW will return to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex on Friday to face the Kansas Jayhawks. The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. MT.
Cowgirls Close Out Gonzaga Invite with Two Wins
Spokane, Wash. – The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team came away with two victories at the Gonzaga Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The day began with a 3-1 (28-26, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23) win over Utah before closing out the tournament with another 3-1 (24-26, 28-26, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Montana.
It was a career day for a number of Cowgirls. Senior libero Allison Waldvogel, junior outside hitter Laura Beach and freshman setter/libero Cori Aafedt each had career matches against Utah. Waldvogel recorded a career-high and set a new school record in four sets with 35 digs, while Beach tied a career-high in kills with 17. Aafedt recorded the lone double-double for the Cowgirls against Utah. She had a team-high 20 assists to go along with 17 digs and four service aces. Against the Griz, senior outside hitter Kayla Henderson tied a career-high in kills with 13, as junior setter Courtney Chacon set a season-high with 28 assists. Junior outside hitter Kayla Slofkiss recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs against Montana.
Wyoming returns to action next week as it hosts the UniWyo Pistol Pete’s Showdown in Laramie. The Cowgirls will welcome Kansas, Marquette and Northern Colorado.
Bowen and DeStefano Pace UW Harriers in Season Opener
Fort Collins, Colo. – Senior Audra DeStefano finished runner-up in the women’s race and fellow senior Amos Bowen was fourth on the men’s side to pace the University of Wyoming cross country teams at the Colorado State Invite on Fridayat Hughes Stadium.
“I thought it was a solid start,” UW head coach Bryan Berryhill said. “We’ve had two really hard weeks of training behind us. We wanted to get off to a good start and I felt like both teams had a solid effort today considering what we have been doing in training.”
DeStefano’s 17:37 placed her just five seconds behind the winner and was the fourth-fastest 5 kilometers by a Cowgirl since 1990. Junior Megan Brunette followed in 12th place in 18:04, while junior Ali Walker was 18th in 18:16. Sophomore Quinn DeStefano finished in 18:45for 36th and freshman Regan VanDePol rounded out UW’s scorers in 18:51 for 39th.
Bowen ran 15:00 for the men’s 5 kilometers, while senior Aaron Derner was 10th in 15:06. Sophomore Jonah Henry placed 22nd in 15:23to outpace senior Dylan Morin by one place and one second. Redshirt freshman Ricky Faure was 28th in 15:31 for the Cowboys’ top five.
Wyoming is off the next two weekends, before returning to action at the Roy Griak Invite on Sept. 26 in Minneapolis.
