(Casper, Wyo.) – This morning Shawn A. Mapp, if Nevada, had preliminary hearing this morning for felony possession of a firearm, failure to appear, public intoxication, interference w/police officer, and carry concealed weapon.

Mapp’s case was bound over to District Court, and his bond was set at $20,000.

According to court records, on Friday, Sept. 18 at approximately 9:45 p.m. Casper Police Department officers were patrolling the area of 2nd and Jefferson when they observed a male, whom they recognized as Shawn Mapp, walking through the parking lot of 902 E. 2nd Street Bradley’s Convenience Store. Officers knew that Mapp had an active warrant out for his arrest; officers pulled into the area and addressed Mapp by his first name, according to court records.

Reports show that officer’s initial salutation was ignored by Mapp, who glanced at officers and continued walking away. Officers yelled at Mapp once more assuring that he heard his name being called. Mapp once again ignored officers. After a third command, Mapp allegedly reached his right hand into the front right pocket of his jeans before pulling it out. When Mapp removed his hand from his pocket, officers observed a small metallic object in his hand, which reports indicate was difficult to identify. Court documents then indicate Mapp began walking faster, holding the object down by his side.

It was then observed by officers that another man had just exited the store and was walking toward his vehicle in the middle of the parking lot of Bradleys.

As the individual walked to his car Mapp walked swiftly towards him. As Mapp got closer to the male, Mapp reached out his right hand towards the front pocket of the other male’s hooded sweatshirt. Reports show that at this point officers recognized the object in Mapp’s hand to be a semi-automatic pistol. This was extremely concerning to officers as they knew Mapp to be a multiple time, convicted felon.

According to reports, Mapp attempted to drop the pistol into the other male’s sweatshirt pocket, but was unsuccessful, causing the pistol to fall to the ground. One of the officers then drew his pistol and gave orders to Mapp to keep his hands out in the open. After more orders from CPD officrs Mapp allegedly reluctantly complied by lying face down on the ground. Officers placed Mapp in handcuffs.

Officers recovered the pistol, a Colt .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol with the safety off. Officers noted that Mapp was noticeably intoxicated and found a pint of vodka in his back pocket.

Officers spoke with the other male who denied having ever met Mapp and confirmed that Mapp had tried to ‘stash’ the pistol in his pocket.

Mapp was transported to Natrona County Detention Center and charged with felony possession of a firearm, failure to appear, public intoxication, interference w/PO, carry concealed weapon.
