Information has been released on a fatal crash, near the city of Cheyenne. Officials say that an out of control vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer combination, on August 24th, just before 7:00 pm.
According to a WYDOT crash summary, 30-year-old Nebraska resident Brian Hendersen died from injuries suffered during the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.
The crash, which is being investigated by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, occurred near milepost 21, of US Highway 85, in Laramie County.
Hendersen was reportedly driving a Mazda southbound on US Highway 85, negotiating a sweeping left hand curve.
Investigators believe the Mazda’s right-side tires crossed the right fog line and on to the edge of the pavement. Hendersen is believed to have corrected back to the left and started to enter a broadside skid rotating counter-clockwise. The Mazda entered the northbound lane where the driver over-corrected back to the right and entered in to a broadside skid rotating clockwise.
A Peterbilt was northbound, on US Hwy 85, while the Mazda was nearly completely broadside in the northbound lane.
The Peterbilt’s left front struck the Mazda on the driver side.
The Peterbilt is a truck/tractor combination unit, hauling a semi-trailer, and a full-trailer behind the power unit.
Officials say the combination jackknifed into the southbound lane after impact. The trailers came to rest across both lanes of travel.
Speed and driver inattention are currently being investigated as possible contributing factors in the crash.
