(Casper, Wyo.) – The University of Wyoming at Casper (UW-Casper) recently purchased a drone to enhance student educational opportunities, adding the equipment to its already impressive state-of-the-art technology.

The DJI Phantom 3 Quadcopter is controlled by a tablet, and can maneuver through obstacles and to heights more than a mile away. The first users of this new technology will be UW-Casper’s technical education and secondary science education-biology students on the first day of school, August 24, when they take the drone to the Braille Trail on Casper Mountain to photograph pinecones at the tops of pine trees.

“The drone will assist us in data collection and observation of difficult to reach, if not totally inaccessible, subjects,” said Jason Katzmann, assistant professor of secondary education at UW-Casper. “There is also huge potential when using drones to discover math and science concepts by creating, making, building, flying, and landing the drones. Students need to acquire drone-operating skills, as the number of drone-related jobs are projected to be on increase in the next three years.”
