A Bit of History: The mysteries of the famed, Buffalo Bill Cody at Fort Caspar Museum

Author Jeff Barnes at Fort Caspar Museum

(Casper, Wyo.) – Around eighty Wyoming enthusiasts gathered at Fort Caspar Museum last night to unlock seven discussed mysteries about the celebrated icon, Buffalo Bill Cody.

  • Where are Buffalo Bill’s parents, Issac and Mary Cody buried?
  • Did Buffalo Bill really ride for the Pony Express?
  • Was there really a “Battle of the Bill?”
  • Where Buffalo Bill Cody and General George Custer friends?
  • Where is Buffalo Bill’s last buffalo located?
  • Whose has Buffalo Bill’s true Metal of Honor?
  • Where is Buffalo Bill really buried?

Author and historian, Jeff Barnes, a fifth generation Nebraskan spoke to the room about his book, “Great Plains Guide to Buffalo Bill, The:Forts, Fights & Other Sites,” and answered the mysteries.

“Buffalo Bill Cody was the world’s first Super Star in the 1900s. With fame and fortune comes some mystery. Some of these mysteries, I hope never get truly solved, it would take the Legend out of Buffalo Bill,” reported Barnes.

Barnes went on to unlock the secrets that he had discovered about Buffalo from his research which he reports in detail in his book, we don’t want to steal his thunder and report all of the answers!

But, we will leave it up to you to decide, he reported last night that Buffalo Bills parents could be buried in either:

a) Mount Cedar in Cody, Wyoming

b)Mount Aurora, Leavenworth, Washington

c)Washington DC

d)Devils Tower Monument, Wyoming

Barnes’ next mystery, Buffalo Bill riding in the Pony Express, we will leave that one up to you.

“‘Battle of the Bills,’ may or may not have happened. Buffalo Bill Cody had lots of people out to claim his name, including Buffalo Bill Cramer, Buffalo Bill Brooks, Buffalo Bill Wilson and the one that started the possible ‘Battle of the Bills’ was Medicine Bill Comstock,” said Barnes.

He continued to report that the two set out for a buffalo hunt to claim the name, it was reported that Buffalo Bill Cody shot 69 buffalo during the hunt and Comstock killed 46, Buffalo Bill claiming the victory.

“From my research, I have found that the possible site of the hunt was along US 40 outside of Monument, Nebraska. Near the site historians have found numerous pieces of glass in the area, so whether the hunt took place may be unknown, but someone must have had quite the party there,” said Barnes.

Barnes explained how it was unlikely that Buffalo Bill Cody and General Custer were great friends. The two were fighting for attention from the public, and both had huge egos.

“It is safe to assume that the two weren’t the greatest friends that some like to believe. They were both jealous of one another.”

Quiz time! Where do you think Buffalo Bill’s last buffalo resides?

a) The Colorado Buffalo in Golden, Colorado’s  Museum

b) The Wyoming Buffalo in Cody, Wyoming’s Museum

c)The Nebraska Buffalo in Monument, Nebraska Museum

d) Buffalo Bill did not shoot any  buffalo

Barnes continued his lecture, and reported that Buffalo Bill Cody had received numerous metals throughout his life one from Colorado and one from Wyoming which one is the true metal of honor is open for debate.

The big question, that many people want to know, where is Buffalo Bill Cody truly buried.

Barnes explained,

“During Buffalo Bill’s lifetime he spent a great deal of time in Wyoming and in Colorado as well as traveling the country with his Wild West Shows. He told many of his Wyoming friends that he wanted to be buried on Mount Cedar in Cody, Wyoming when he passed. But, when he passed away in 1917 of kidney failure, his wife Lulu supposedly sold his burial rights to Colorado for $10,000.”

“Now Buffalo Bill died in January, the ground was still frozen in Colorado on Lookout Mountain, where Lulu wanted his body buried. So it is said that they kept his body until the ground thawed out before burying him. Some stories that I have read reported that some of Buffalo Bill’s friends from Wyoming, found an undertaker and went into Colorado, stole Buffalo Bill’s body and switched it out with a similar looking fellow and brought him back to Cedar Mountain to be buried,” said Barnes.

The fight between Colorado and Wyoming continues, where do you think Buffalo Bill’s body is buried?

Barnes will be presenting in Cody, Wyoming next week and continue his tour through the west.

Next Wednesday, July 1st, Fort Caspar will host another Free Summer Lecture with Barbara Mueller as she discusses, “John Colter: Superhero” at 6:30 pm.

Anglers warned of warming water temperatures on the North Platte River

(Casper, Wyo.) – This year the flow of the North Platte River is unusually low and air temperatures are increasing. These conditions have the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Casper fish management staff very concerned about the impacts on both fish and anglers in the North Platte River below Government Bridge.

Fisheries Biologist Matt Hahn reports trout experience significant mortality at prolonged exposure to water temperatures greater than 75 degrees Fahrenheit and brief exposure to temperatures over 80 degrees are lethal.

“With the unseasonable low flow and increasing daytime air temperatures, water temperature in the river is approaching 80 degrees at Glenrock and we have seen 76 degrees in the river at Casper most days this week,” Hahn said. “Basically, we are asking anglers fishing the North Platte right now to be aware of the unseasonably high water temperatures and to be sure they monitor water temps while fishing. Because fish stress more quickly in warmer water, when water temperature hit 70 degrees, know that catching and releasing can be harmful to trout.”

Water temperature is particularly important for anglers practicing catch and release or where our regulations require fish to be released. The Game and Fish asks all anglers practicing catch and release to consider the following:

  • Fish early in the morning while water temperature is cooler. Carry a pocket thermometer and monitor the water temperature.
  • If the water temperature is at or above 65 degrees, consider keeping what you catch within the regulations, if 70 degrees or higher, do not attempt to catch and release trout.

These are not new regulations, just recommendations to assist with the conservation of the fishery resource.

Bereaved Parents Awareness recognized this month in Wyoming

(Casper, Wyo.) – Bereaved Parents Awareness Month is in July, the  death of a child has been described as the worst pain one can possibly endure. For friends and family, knowing what to say or do for a grieving parent is difficult.

Bereaved Parents Awareness Month is a time to learn what to do in the most challenging times.

According to research, bereaved mothers and fathers experience more physical and emotional issues than do non-bereaved parents including: severe depression, mortality due to illness, suicide, and failed marriages.

Grief is a normal and natural reaction to the death of a loved one, but when it is your child’s death that you are grieving, the reaction can be more intense and devastating.  Each year the parents of over 53,000 US children face the unthinkable tragedy of losing their child through death.

An encouraging finding is that most bereaved parents found support through their family and community.  Over 85% of these parents said that family, coworkers, and friends were helpful to them following their loss of a child.

The extent, the intensity, and the need for professional help depends upon the degree of problems and coping resources these parents have acquired prior to their loss.

Individuals interested in helping bereaved parents recover are encouraged to engage them in constructive and rewarding activities which produce a sense of meaning and well-being.

This July,Central Wyoming Counselling Center, health professionals, friends, and family members, are here to help embrace those who have lost their child during Bereaved Parents Awareness Month.

(Wyoming) – Becker’s Hospital Review has named Wyoming Medical Center one of its “100 Great Community Hospitals 2015.

It is the second year in a row WMC has earned the honor.

Becker’s editorial team selected hospitals based on quality, service to their communities and other safety and performance measures. They also used various rankings and awards including those from iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades and CareChex.

Wyoming Medical Center was just one of two Wyoming hospitals included on the list.

“This list recognizes hospital quality and safety programs, things we’ve been working on many years,” said Vickie Diamond, president and CEO of Wyoming Medical Center. “We work hard every day to be better in the care we deliver.  I am happy to see our medical staff and employees so honored, and I am proud of the great care they provide our community.”

Hospitals on this list have fewer than 550 beds, and many are in rural areas. “Whether independent or part of a larger health system, the following hospitals have continually worked to provide the quality of care and the experience patients deserve and expect,” Becker’s wrote in the introduction to its list.

About Wyoming Medical Center, Becker’s said: “Nonprofit Wyoming Medical Center has 217 beds and 233 providers on staff, and is considerably larger than when it was founded in 1911 with just 35 beds. Its campus today has more than 969,000 square feet of space covering four city blocks. Healthgrades bestowed its General Surgery Excellence Award to the hospital in 2015.”

Bureau of Reclamation anticipates releasing more water next week to flow in the North Platte

(Casper, Wyo.) -Today Oil City News spoke with the Bureau of Reclamation’s Chief Resources Management representative, Mahonri Williams,

“We are getting really close to releasing more water flow from the Grey Reef Reservoir. It isn’t as easy as letting more water out, it is a process. We anticipate releasing around 2,000 cubic feet per second (cfs)  of water sometime next week.”

During an average winter, the snowpack flows into Wyoming’s streams, but at the beginning of this spring Wyoming’s snowpack was considerably below average.

The water that is stored in Pathfinder flows into the Alcova Lake, then Grey Reef, and then into the North Platte and the water from the river flows into Glendo Reservoir.

From Glendo, Williams stated, the water is used for irrigation in Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming. Glendo becomes the storage of the water used for irrigation.

Williams continued, because of the dry spring bureau conserved a high volume of water in Glendo during May and April.

But what we all experienced in May and into June, was lots of rain. Scottsbluff, Nebraska received eight inches of rain in May, which was 300 percent more than their average rainfall. The Casper Airport received two times the average with four inches of rain in May.

So, the water in Glendo was not needed and the rain led to the water in Glendo overflowing into ‘flood pools’.

Glendo Reservoir is monitored by the US Army Corps of Engineers, they report to the Bureau of Reclamation when more or less water can be released.

They reported that the water was overflowing into ‘flood pools’ and this led to the Bureau of Reclamation cutting back the water flows from Pathfinder, Alcova, and the Grey Reef flowing into the North Platte.

Williams reported today that irrigation demands are just now starting to come back up, thus draining the ‘flood pools’ and allowing the Bureau of Reclamation to release more water into the North Platte.

“We anticipate the flood pools dissipating towards the end of June and into July. We are currently releasing only 500 cfs at this time but we plan to increase that next week to 2,000 cfs as we move into July,” said Williams.

He also stated that the thirty year average for the release of water in the month of June is around 2,300 cfs.

So grab your boogie boards, tubes, mattresses, kayaks and sunscreen and look to hit the river next week.

(Brooklyn, NY) – With the twenty-seventh overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakes select, Larry Nance Jr. Power Forward from the Wyoming Cowboys!

Nance Jr. becomes the first player to be selected in the NBA Draft since Theo Ratliff was selected in 1995 by Detroit.

He is the 28th Cowboy to be selected in the NBA Draft over time.

“This means the world to me,” Nance said. “All the hard work that has been put in and the time and the effort. Just to hear my name called was surreal. It hasn’t set in yet. And the Lakers are such a historic franchise. Hopefully I can come in with the other guys that were drafted and continue that culture. I’m excited to see what the next step has in store for me.”

Nance capped his career at Wyoming this spring by leading the Pokes to a 25-10 overall record for the program’s first-ever Mountain West tournament title and first NCAA Championships appearance since 2002. The 6-8, 235-pound forward paced the Cowboys at 16.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, while adding 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals.

His 51 percent from the field was third in the MW and 60thin the NCAA. He notched seven double-doubles during the season, including 10 games with 20-or-more points. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

Gay marriage and LGBT rights supporters rally on Center Street in Casper. (File photo)

(Washington, D.C.) – With the recent 5-4 decision from the US Supreme Court, all states will recognize and issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, according to national reports.

Wyoming last year was the 32nd state to adopt same-sex marriage out of a total 37 states before this ruling. Now all states will recognize licenses issued from any state and will begin issuing licenses in the coming weeks.

The decision upholds all current decisions or state statutes that have allowed same-sex marriages to carry on, the remaining 13 states, their legislature’s or lower court decisions have now been overturned by the Supreme Court.

The ruling came from Obergefell v. Hodges, which challenges the same-sex marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky and Tennessee, overturning the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, according to national reports.
