Education First is searching for Host Families for Foreign Exchange Students

Education First (EF) High School Exchange Year is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging cultural awareness and fostering understanding between the USA and countries worldwide through international education and exchange.  Since 1979 EF has been assisting families, schools and communities across the U.S. to welcome thousands of exchange students into their homes, their classrooms, and their everyday lives. Our international students come from over 20 countries around the globe—from Thailand to Spain, Denmark to Italy, Japan to Germany—and are eager to fulfill their dreams of spending a life-changing year at an American high school. The deadline for finding host families for 2015-2016 school year is fast approaching, so become a mentor and change the life of a teen from another country!

The EF students coming to America are selected through a rigorous screening process to ensure that they are well-suited for an exchange experience. EF students speak English and have a strong desire to experience America. They are excited to learn about the American culture and have American experiences that we might take for granted. Baseball games, Thanksgiving celebrations, school sports and homecoming are just a few of the rewarding experiences that will create memories of a lifetime for your exchange student.

As a host family, you choose a student from a list of profiles based on your family’s interests and activities. You provide room and nutritious meals for the exchange student, and treat the student as a member of the family. Yes, he can help you with the chores, just as your kids do! EF students are supported financially by their natural parents and pay for their own insurance, school supplies, clothing and entertainment. Students can have their own room or they can share a room with the same gender child as long as they have a separate bed and a place for their belongings.

There is no “typical” host family. Single parents, young couples, retirees, and families with or without children are all able to give an EF student a caring home. All host families are united by a desire to open their hearts and their homes to a young person from abroad. Hosting an exchange student is a truly rewarding experience. It allows your family to feel a sense of pride in sharing your traditions and your community, opens your own children’s eyes to the wider world, and helps form a lasting friendship with someone from across the globe. In fact, many host families host exchange students multiple times and often stay in touch with their students for a lifetime.

As the local coordinator, Zhanna Gallegos finds caring host families, helps families select students, mentors students placed in Natrona and Converse counties, and supports students and families 24/7 throughout the exchange year.

For more information about how to host a foreign exchange student through EF, call Zhanna Gallegos at 797-2461, or check out videos, photos, and FAQ’s at efexchangeyear.org.

Apply to host a foreign exchange student online at http://info.efexchangeyear.org/apply.

Mead issues statement on Affordable Care Act ruling

Governor Matt Mead issued the following statement on the US Supreme Court’s decision on the King vs. Burwell case:

“I challenged the ACA because I did not think this was a good law or a good approach to health care for the United States or for Wyoming,” said Governor Mead. “Wyoming and other states lost this challenge in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has again spoken, upholding key provisions of the ACA. We recognize the ACA is the law of the land and that the United States Supreme Court’s ruling confirms it is the law of the land. This decision allows 17,000 people in Wyoming to continue to receive a tax credit for health insurance and avoids many potential complications of those individuals losing that credit. Simply stated, this ruling maintains the status quo. It will still be necessary for Wyoming to develop its own path forward for better health care access and better health care for our citizens. I will continue to work with the Legislature on these important issues.”

(Casper, Wyo.) – Participating in the Collings Foundation’s Wings of Freedom Tour, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter, will fly into Casper/Natrona County International Airport in Casper, WY for a visit from July 3 to July 5.

P-51 Mustang. (Dwight Smith/Shutterstock)

Explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 8 in flying condition in the United States, the B-24J and Full Dual Control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the World.

Theywill be on display at Casper/Natrona County International Airport in Casper, located at Good Warbirds, 8220 Fuller Street.

Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under.

The B-17 & B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home.

The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters.

B-24 Liberator. (Ivan Cholakov/Shutterstock)

After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-24 & P-51 – and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide.

At each location we encourage local veterans and their families to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public.

Trooper Bill Kirkman

The annual Wyoming Highway Patrol Association Awards Banquet was help last Friday in Sundance to recognize members of Patrol for individual and group achievements and actions in 2014. Recognition given at the banquet consisted of awards from both the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association and the Wyoming Highway Patrol Strategic Plan.

Here’s a breakdown of the awards and the stories behind them:

Lieutenant Chris Schell

Lieutenant Chris Schell

The Distinguished Service Medal was given to Lieutenant Chris Schell and Trooper Bill Kirkman. Lt. Schell’s actions have greatly enhanced the image and efficiency of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.  His actions have also contributed to an enhanced level of safety for the citizens of Wyoming. After a fatal shooting involving Casper Police Officers on Sept. 30, 2014, Trp. Kirkman took a leadership role and began verifying the officers’ well being.  Trp. Kirkman also made efforts to initially secure the crime scene. Not only did Trp. Kirkman maintain his composure, he immediately assumed a leadership role and further protected the victims, officers and crime scene. Both Schell and Kirkman are stationed in Casper.

Trooper Mitch Kannier (of Rock Springs) and Trooper Kent Hutchinson (of Evanston) were awarded the Luke Schauland Medal of Life.

On June 4th, 2014, Trooper Kannier, stationed in Division “E”, Rock Springs, was dispatched to the area of Little America, Wyoming, for an infant having a seizure. Trooper Kannier arrived on scene, and discovered the infant was not responsive or breathing.  Trooper Kannier suspected the child was choking and took immediate life saving action, dislodged the blockage, and revived the child.

On July 2nd, 2014, Trooper Hutchinson, stationed out of Division “D”, Evanston, was dispatched to Interstate 80 west of Cheyenne for a reported medical emergency.  When Trooper Hutchinson arrived on scene, he discovered a husband administering CPR to his non-responsive wife. The husband was exhausted and pleaded for help. Trooper Hutchinson flew into action and began administering CPR. Trooper Hutchinson continued his efforts for 16 minutes until emergency medical technicians arrived on scene.  Through Trooper Hutchinson’s efforts, the EMTs were able to regain a pulse.

Canine Robbie was posthumously awarded the Canine Purple Heart. On October 19th, 2014, Trooper Chatfield was conducting a vehicle search near mile post 266 on Interstate 80 westbound east of Elk Mountain, Wyoming. Once Robbie had completed his search of the interior of the suspect vehicle, Trooper Chatfield attempted to reconnect Robbie’s leash. As Trooper Chatfield reached for Robbie, Robbie leapt from the suspect vehicle and ran into the lanes of travel. After entering the travel lanes of I-80, Robbie was struck by semi truck and killed instantly.

Sheridan/Dietz Port of Entry Officer Troy Tyree was awarded the Top Port of Entry Officer award for 2014. Officer Tyree won the award as he works hard to be a team player on his crew and at the port. Officer Tyree demonstrated high production numbers of permits and inspections, shoveled snow and cleared sidewalks, freely helps others to find solutions and volunteers to work holidays so others can have the time off.

Trooper Brian Sinner, stationed in Division “F”, Torrington and now Lieutenant Mike Simmons, Division “J” Supervisor in Laramie, were awarded the Combat Cross. The pair was involved in the shooting of an armed suspect. The suspect had allegedly shot and injured a patron of a bar located in Hawk Springs, Wyoming.  The suspect fled the scene in a motor vehicle. After locating the vehicle, the suspect eventually fired a shot at a passing motor vehicle and exited his vehicle with rifle in hand. The suspect pointed his rifle at the troopers. Lieutenant Simmons engaged the suspect with his duty weapon striking him multiple times with the suspect falling to the ground. Once the scene was secure, the suspect was treated for his wounds and transported by ambulance to a Cheyenne hospital where he survived.

WHP Dispatcher James “Jim” Ridgeway received the Top Dispatcher Award. During 2014, Dispatcher Ridgeway went above and beyond to assist the Wyoming Highway Patrol Communications Center. Dispatcher Ridgeway is dependable and very seldom calls in sick because he knows if he does, it will not only leave co-workers short and that officer safety may be compromised. Dispatcher Ridgeway is willing to do whatever is needed and never complains about it.

WHP Trooper Marc Russell was nominated and received the Top Trooper Award. Trooper Russell is currently stationed in Division “M” that covers the Wheatland and Douglas areas. Trooper Russell views his position as a State Trooper as a true public servant. He maintains a positive outlook, even through difficult situations, and is a credit to the agency. Trooper Russell sets a positive example for his peers, works hard toward attaining the goals of the strategic plan, and actively strives to increase highway safety.

Port of Entry Quality Control Analyst (QCA) Richard Smith received the WHP Top Civilian commendation for 2014. Richard works out of WHP Headquarters in Cheyenne. For the first part of 2014, Richard continued to perform the function of both QCA’s as he had done for much of 2013. During this time, he continued to perform at a superior level. He completed all work accurately, efficiently and in appropriate timelines. The addition of a second QCA also added training to his duties. He once again stepped up his work and has done an excellent job of training. Several federal and internal reports , budgets, scale replacement at the US-85 Port, and planning for Port of Entry In-Service are among his accomplishments and have either been a direct result of Richard’s work or the training he has provided.

At the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) in Incline Village, Nevada, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead has been elected as Chairman of the WGA for the coming year. Governor Mead succeeds Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, who served as Chairman for the past year. Montana Governor Steve Bullock will serve as Vice Chairman.

“It is an honor to be chosen to lead the Western Governors’ Association, and I very much look forward to serving as Chairman. I thank Governor Sandoval for his leadership this past year and for his work creating the Western Governors Drought Forum,” said Governor Mead.

The Governor announced he will focus on the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as his Chairman’s Initiative for 2016.

“Western states have shown leadership in species and habitat conservation and the bipartisan nature of WGA allows the Western Governors to be well-positioned to continue leading on the issue. This is a western issue and my focus as Chairman will center on habitat conservation, recovery of species and making the law better,” Governor Mead said.

The June 2016 WGA Annual Meeting will take place in Jackson, Wyoming.

Established in 1984, the Western Governors’ Association is an independent, non-partisan organization of Governors from 19 Western states and 3 U.S. flag islands.
