A former Sweetwater County resident who recently returned to Rock Springs is in custody. Officials say the man is charged with Aggravated Assault and Battery after a stabbing.
Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell said county detectives and deputies arrested Kenneth J. Peterson, 41, on Friday at a motor home he shares with the female victim.
Lowell says the victim reported the assault to the Sheriff’s Office on Friday morning and told detectives that she had been in a dating relationship with Peterson since December of 2017, moved with him to Indiana, then accompanied him back to Rock Springs not long ago.
As described in court documents, the victim told Detective Wharton that she and Peterson argued over a missing meth pipe. Peterson, she said, cut up some of her clothing with a knife, “slapped her in the mouth,” “stabbed her,” and “continued to punch her in the head.”
The victim said Peterson told her later that “it might be best if she left, because he was going to end up slitting her throat.” She did so, she told law enforcement, and went to the home of a friend.
Officials describe the victim to have bruising “around both of her eyes, nose, and forehead” and also noted a puncture wound to her rib cage.
The victim was examined and treated at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Lowell said Peterson is scheduled for an initial appearance in Circuit Court on Monday afternoon, as the investigation continues.
